Tips for happy hires

How do you keep candidates from backing out of a new role? Here are some simple tips to keep new hires happy.

Start off on the right foot

Remember, the interview and onboarding process is a two-way street – you’re under review as much as they are. So ask questions you need to know the answers to, like how they work best or how they see themselves fitting in.

Keep in touch

In most cases, your new hire has a notice-period to work out, so make sure you don’t ghost them. Send a weekly email to touch base – this way you’ll keep the new job top of mind and they’re less likely to pull out before the start date.

Set expectations early

The uncertainty of not knowing what they’ll be doing day-to-day can easily stop a candidate from starting. So make sure you set clear expectations from the interview, reiterate it in the job offer and again on their first day. Clarity is key.

Make them feel welcome

New hires want to feel part of the team, and nothing says welcome like gifts. Keep it simple with things like a fresh notebook, pen or a calendar – small touches can mean a lot. And having something to open will help with nerves.

Introduce the team

Take your team and new hire for coffee, or better yet – organise a team lunch. They’ll be spending the majority of their time with the team, so help them to form connections from the get go. It’ll only cost the company card.
