HR thoughts for April

April 12, 2024 ProgressionHR

It’s challenging in the HR job market at the moment – whether you’re an HR leader getting by in a hiring freeze, doing a lot more with less, or as an HR job seeker competing in this sluggish job market. So, this month we wanted to share four uplifting HR related things we’ve recently come across.

FOMO vs Compliance

We’ve heard that more and more businesses are finding that getting people back into the office is more about FOMO and much less about compliance. This was discussed in a recent Culture Amp webinar and since then we have noticed more of this around us. Increasingly, we’re hearing that people want to be back together in person to share knowledge, build capability, generate energy and just work together. At the same time, we’re also buoyed by the increase in positive workplace experiences being created in order to encourage people back. We can pretty much all do our compliance tasks from anywhere now, and nothing beats connection – it’s such an important part of our lives and there’s always a bit of magic when we get together. And it has got to be good for our spirits, too!

HR Comedy

We recently had a good laugh and a fun night out at H.R. The Musical. We headed along to their first season at Q Theatre a few weeks ago – and it really is hilarious. So, we highly recommend getting your HR pals together and heading along. And, as the cast includes HR professionals, they really do nail some of “those” characters we come across at work and the issues that are seen in HR every day https://www.comedyfestival.co.nz/find-a-show/h-r-the-musical/

HR Inspo

One of our favourite uplifting moments of the week has to be receiving the 3-2-1 email from James Clear every Friday morning. If you haven’t already, sign up – https://jamesclear.com/3-2-1. He shares his own thoughts plus some thoughts of others. All are inspiring, are usually uplifting and really do resonate. Useful in HR, but also just for life in general!

Putting ourselves in the driver’s seat

We were part of an enlightening conversation recently about the importance of being responsible for our own happiness, rather than the trend we’ve seen over the last few years of moving the onus to our employer. As HR teams, so many of you have increasingly had the extra responsibility placed on you to accommodate employee happiness – not just at work but really in all aspects of their life. It’s awesome to see all of the new wellness initiatives that have been implemented these last few years – but it was suggested that perhaps a shift towards personal responsibility could be a good thing for everyone. And puts us all in the driver’s seat.

We hope that these musings bring a spring to your step, just like they have for us. Feel free to share any other uplifting ideas or inspirational HR reads, we’d love to hear from you!
