4 Q’s to ask before you make a move

Think you’re ready for a fresh start? As the HR job seekers’ market changes and the competition for jobs heats up, it’s time to put in the work before you start looking to make your job hunt journey a little easier.

So, start by asking yourself these four key questions. Then dig a little deeper with our handy template to help you weigh up whether making a move is the right call.

Q1: What’s my goal for a new role?

Sometimes a new challenge is all you’re after, and other times you need to shake off some of the responsibility. Set a clear and realistic goal for your next step.

Think about the big picture. Does it align with your overall ambition? Would a move help you get there? Are you looking to step up, step across or even step down?

Q2: What are your values?

We all have personal core values that can influence our behaviour and help us make decisions and set goals. Your values can also affect your relationships at home and at work.

Spend some time thinking about your personal core values. Consider whether your current workplace’s cultural values and your personal values align? Are your values matched with your team’s? Your manager’s? If not, what’s missing?

Q3: What kind of team do you want to be a part of?

You spend such a significant amount of time each week collaborating with colleagues, so you’ll want to be around people who bring out the best in you.

Think about your team. What kind of working styles push your skills and thinking? What management style works best for you?

Q4: What perks matter the most to you?

Perks and pay hold hands. So, ask yourself what your package includes past the base salary.

Think about what your workplace offers you. Do you have flexible working hours, helping you achieve better work-life balance? Is your wellbeing taken as seriously as it should be? Consider things like how many annual leave days you get, wellbeing days, share options or being able to bring your dog to work. Or are there discounts or freebies, like free parking or health insurance that make your life easier? Be clear on this before you start your job hunt to make sure the new role stacks up.
