Smiling through the Delta Blues!

September 27, 2021 ProgressionHR

They say laughter is the best medicine. Well, after the last 6 weeks or so, we thought we’d put our regular HR content on the back burner and give you all a few reasons to laugh – about ourselves! And we throw a few interview curveball questions at you too. We hope you enjoy a few giggles…

6 Curly Questions:

1.  “How would you solve problems if you were from Mars?”

This question is asked by Amazon to see if your candidate can think outside what’s traditional or normal!

2. “Why are manholes round?”

Swiss bank UBS ask this question to see if candidates can apply problem-solving skills in their role.

3. “If you were a tree, what kind of tree would you be and why?”

A little bit bizarre! American company Walgreens used this to test a candidate’s creativity. For example – “I would be an oak tree, because I’m strong and dependable”.

4. “We finish the interview and you step outside the office and find a lottery ticket that ends up winning $10 million. What would you do?”

A question designed to find a candidate’s true motivation for a role. (A company might hesitate to hire someone who only wants the job to make money).

5. “If you had to be shipwrecked on a deserted island, but all your human needs—such as food and water—were taken care of, what two items would you want to have with you?”

A question asked by companies like Yahoo. It gives candidates a chance to demonstrate creativity and innovativeness. And determine a candidate’s priorities!

6. “If you had a choice between two superpowers, being invisible or flying, which would you choose?”

An indicator of leadership qualities. Do you prefer to be in the spotlight (flying), or more behind-the-scenes (invisible)?

Humour aside, we understand that it’s an odd time right now with New Zealand in varying stages of lockdown. While working hard and being professional is something to strive for, creating an environment we enjoy being in is equally important. And being able to share a laugh with workmates is a good start! So here’s one more fitting meme to leave you with…

Till next month, take care.
